Launceston – Tasmania

Launceston is Tasmania’s second major city after Hobart. The city boasts a country charm with heritage old construction, excellent food and wine and beautiful scenic surroundings. The city has lot to offer for visitors.

Just 2 mins from the CBD you will find a natural Gorge to the Tamar River called Cataract Gorge. It is just a 10 mins walk from the CBD , hence you can park your car anywhere nearby, although Gorge itself has plenty of parking. Cataract Gorge is one of its kind and is the best thing an urban city can offer. With a kiosk, restaurant and swimming pool, rolling lawns and kids play area, a footbridge(Alexandra Suspension Bridge) and a chairlift across the river, peacocks, Echidnas and wallabies , plenty of short walks, rock climbing , Gorge is a complete package in itself. One can easily spend half day to one full day here. Cataract gorge chairlift is must do if you are in Launceston. One could enjoy breathtaking Cataract gorge view from above.

Another surprising thing about Launceston is its heritage old buildings. We stayed at Cornwall Hotel built in 1823. The surrounds have a lot of heritage buildings be it a Post office, Custom house, bank all are date back to 1800. One can either drive along or walk by the city roads to experience such old buildings.

We also did 50 min river cruise where you will enjoy skippers commentary , history and about current affairs of the city.

Just a 30 min drive from the city you can enjoy Tamar Valley . You will find winery on both side of the Tamar river and one can taste and enjoy wines. On the western shore , Brady’s Lookout is a great stop to enjoy the beautiful expansive views of the river  and surrounding valley.
