Kangaroo Island – South Australia, Australia
Kangaroo Island, length is around 145 Km (~90 Miles) from one end to another. It is loaded with full of exotic nature beauty – native animals, natural rock formation, National parks. Island is best explored by self drive. We had little less than 2 days to spend in Kangaroo Island, which is way packed and hectic, we recommend at least 2 nights.
Our Kangaroo Island (KI) adventure started from Cape Jervis which is a 1.5 hour drive south of Adelaide, via the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula. SeaLink operates ferry service daily from Cape Jervis and takes about 45min to reach the island.
Our one way google map itinerary,
Our first stop was at Prospect Hill lookout which is the highest point of KI with a rewarding views of the island. It takes around 500 steps to get to the top and is highly recommended stop.
Then we head to the Seal bay Conservation park and had an amazing encounter with Sea Lions and pups. There is a park Entry fee with 2 option, self guided board walk( No entry into beach where the real excitement is) or a guided tour (you need to visit seal bay website for tour timings).
The time we finished Seal bay, it was lunch time. There aren’t much eateries options around here, we stopped at Vivonne Bay General Store for our lunch and the food was exotic. After a long lunch we head off to some adventure to Little Sahara a natural sand dune covering 2km, do some sandboarding and toboggan here. Hire boards at KI Outdoor Actions for as little as $37. If you have time Kelly Hill Caves is worth a visit.
Next day early morning we drive to iconic Flinders Chase National Park from Western KI Caravan Park Cabin. One needs to buy tickets online or at the visitor center and the parks are open for visitors from 9AM to 5PM daily. Drive through Flinders Chase National Park is amazing, you find lot of photo points . Our first stop for the day was Admiral Arch , beautiful natural arch, one can take an easy boardwalk around the cliff face that leads to viewing platform overlooking the arch with a breathtaking View. You can spot Fur-seal and pups near the rock pools beneath the arch.
After the Admiral Arch visit picture-square Cape Du Couedic Lighthouse for amazing photography which include historic keeper’s cottage.
Cape Du Couedic Lighthouse
Then we head to the iconic Remarkable Rocks. The rocks are accessible via boardwalk that takes us close to the monument, from here one can explore the Rocks formed 500 million years ago. One can visit Flinders Chase all year round, but winter is the time you’ll see lot of animal activities ( Whales, Echidnas, Seals, Kangaroos, cape barren geese).
We then head back to Penneshaw we wanted to watch kangaroo feed at Stokes bay’s Waves & Wildlife Cottages (we where bit late to arrive, its recommended to stay over night for a beautiful experience). So we took the other route with a stopover at Kings George Beach , Stokes bay with stunning views , Kingscote.
