Cape Byron Walking Track

The Cape Byron walking track hike is another popular activity in Byron Bay that offers stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape. The hike is a 3.7 km loop that takes you around the Cape Byron headland and passes by several lookout points, beaches, and the iconic Cape Byron lighthouse.

The hike starts at either Main Beach parking lot or Wategos Beach parking lot (depending on where you get car parking. We starrted our hike from Wategos Beach) and follows a well-marked and well-maintained path up to the Cape Byron headland. The path is mostly uphill but not too difficult, and there are plenty of places to stop and rest. Along the way, you’ll pass through dense coastal vegetation and enjoy panoramic views of the ocean.

Parking:
Wategos Beach is a popular destination in Byron Bay, and parking in the area can be limited, especially during peak times. There are a few options for parking near Wategos Beach:

Wategos Beach Carpark: There is a small car park at Wategos Beach, which can fill up quickly during peak times. The car park has a capacity of around 20-30 cars and costs $4 per hour or $15 for 4 hours.

Street Parking: There is limited street parking available along Marine Parade and nearby streets. However, parking is limited to two hours, and during peak times, it can be difficult to find a spot.

Public Transport: There are public transport options available to Wategos Beach. You can take a bus to the nearby Lighthouse and walk down to the beach, or take a taxi or Uber to the area.

It’s worth noting that parking fines in the area can be quite expensive, so be sure to check parking signs and regulations before leaving your vehicle. Additionally, it’s always a good idea to arrive early or plan ahead to avoid any parking issues.

The first lookout point on the hike is the Fisherman’s Lookout, which offers a great view of the ocean and the Julian Rocks Marine Reserve. From there, the path leads to the Wategos Beach lookout, which provides a picturesque view of the crescent-shaped Wategos Beach. On the way to Fisherman’s Lookout a path leads to Little wategos Beach.

The path then continues along the coast to the Captain Cook Lookout, which is named after the famous explorer who visited the area in 1770. The lookout provides a stunning view of the ocean and the lighthouse. It is believed to be most easterly point of Australia.

As you approach the lighthouse, the path becomes steeper and the views become more spectacular. From the top of the hill, you’ll have an unobstructed view of the ocean and the surrounding landscape, and you’ll be able to see for miles in every direction.

At the top of the hill, you’ll find the Byron Bay Lighthouse. The highlight of the hike is the Cape Byron Lighthouse, which is situated at the easternmost point of the Australian mainland. After visiting the lighthouse, you have two options either take leisurely stroll back down to the Wategos Beach parking lot, or you can follow the same path down hill. Along the way, you’ll pass by several beaches and enjoy more breathtaking views of the ocean.
